    1. The name Ireland can refer to two things, geographical and political. Geographically, it refers to the island of Ireland; politically, it refers to all of that island except the far northeast; this part is officially called the Republic of Ireland, while the latter part is called Northern Ireland (or alternatively, Ulster) and is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland.

      Historical note: All of Ireland became part of Great Britain in 1801; the country was then officially known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Ireland. In 1921 the Protestant portion of Ireland became Northern Ireland, while the rest of the island became a self-governing country called the Irish Free State; this became the independent Republic of Ireland in 1949.
