      1. What Date was the 1st shuttle launched?
        1. April 14, 1981
        2. April 12, 1981
        3. April 12, 1971
        4. July 4, 1984
        1. On April 12, 1981, Space Shuttle Columbia was launched as the 1st Space Shuttle. The mission was STS-1, and it was to show how the shuttle can become a fast transporter into space (at least that was what they hoped!)
      2. How many missions was the liquid tank painted white?
        1. 4
        2. 3
        3. 2
        4. 1
        1. The external fuel tanks (ET), were painted white for 2 missions, STS-1 and STS-2. They stopped painting the shuttle to lower the weight, and it took off a couple hundred pounds. That'll make it easier to get into orbit!
      3. How many missions had ejection seats/cockpits in them?
        1. 0
        2. 2
        3. 4
        4. Every Flight Has One
        1. STS-1 through STS-4 were considered test flights for the shuttle, which was the first ever space rocked to go without an unmanned test. Just in case, they put them in, but just like the paint, it weighed too much! Plus, there was only a 1-2 minute window where they could do it (and it's an 8.5 minute launch!)
      4. What was the name of the first test Space Shuttle?
        1. Challenger
        2. Columbia
        3. Discovery
        4. Enterprise
        1. Enterprise, for you who are Star-Trek fans, can tell where the shuttle got its name from. It flew 3 test landing missions, zero into space. For some missions, it had a funky tail cone to add weight. Also, notice the pointy antenna on the nose?
      5. What does SRB stand for
        1. Stay Right and Back
        2. Solid Rocket Boosters
        3. Shuttle Roll Burn
        4. Something Really Bad
        1. The two big white thingies on the side of the shuttle are Solid Rocket Boosters, the same stuff your toy rocket has, except soooo much more powerful. After only 2:05, they separate, land in the ocean, and are re-used up to 10 times!
      6. What is the only part of the Shuttle NOT Re-usable?
        1. Orbiter
        2. SRB (Solid Rocket Boosters)
        3. ET (External Fuel Tank)
        4. It is all re-used
        1. The External Fuel Tank, carrying liquid fuel, goes up for the entire 8 1/2 minute ride. It is then separated at MECO (Main Engine Cut-Off). After that, it falls down and discintegrates in the atmosphere, and other pieces fly harmlessly down to Earth. The one thing tax payers need to continually pay for!
      7. What was the name of the Challenger Mission that exploded with the teacher onboard?
        1. STS-100
        2. STS-51D
        3. STS-51L
        4. STS-13
        1. This crew carried Christa McAullufle, who was to be the first teacher in space. She was even given an apple before launch! I guess it'll still be on her desk. This tragic January 28, 1986 killed the crew of seven 73 seconds into the flight. A faulty O-ring due to the weather was the ultimate cause (which out of 15 prior missions, only 3 missions didn't experience this issue).
      8. Besides Challenger, what other mission and craft has exploded/discintegrated?
        1. STS-107; Columbia
        2. STS-107; Enterprise
        3. STS-118; Discovery
        4. STS-61F; Atlantis
        1. After 51L, so many flights went flawless that the shuttle program became a second thought, until...February 1, 2003. While over Texas, STS-107 and Columbia, the first shuttle in space, discintigrated coming into Earth's atmosphere. The cause-a piece of foam hitting the wing (in picture above), causing a hole in the heat shield tiles, allowing THOUSANDS OF DEGREES INTO THE SHUTTLE! The scariest part, after liftoff, ground crews reviewing the video wanted an inspection done, but due to scheduling issues, it was waived off. Now, it is mandatory an inspection be done by the shuttle and a sattelite.
      9. Which of these is NOT a Space Shuttle that is used today?
        1. Discovery
        2. Endeavour
        3. Hope
        4. Atlantis
        1. Discovery is the oldest of the fleet, while Atlantis is second. Endeavour was added to substitute for Challenger after it's explosion. Hope is the English translation for a JAXA (Japanese Space Agency) piece that is going up to the International Space Station on STS-124, called Kibo.
      10. When is the space shuttle scheduled to retire?
        1. 2008
        2. 2009
        3. 2010
        4. No Year is Scheduled as of 2008
        1. In 2010, the then 29 year old fleet will be run out. Each orbiter is re-usable, and has or will have been over 30 times each. It's a lot of stress on 3 billion dollar rockets/airplanes (at least airplanes on landing). It's reusable and comes down like an airplane, a 100 ton airplane that is, running on no power. It has launched satellites and helped build the world's most advanced orbiting complex to date (the ISS). It is time to retire and make way for the Constellation Program, set on sending man back to the moon 2 years after the shuttle's retirement. The new rockets will be Ares V rockets (instead of Saturn V during the Apollo missions) as part of Orion missions. So, watch every shuttle launch you can and appreciate it and all it has achieved.
