      1. Making The Grade
        1. A) Printed on the dipstick
        2. B) Printed in the owner’s manual
        3. C) Printed on the sticker I got when the shop changed my oil
        4. D) 10w-40
        1. ANSWER: B. The recommended viscosity for the oil can be found in the owner’s manual, and it’s probably different in the summer and winter.

      2. Keep It Tight
        1. A) Tighten the lug nuts until they squeak
        2. B) Tighten the lug nuts with a pneumatic wrench
        3. C) Tighten the lug nuts with a torque wrench
        4. D) Tighten each nut really tight as I install it
        1. ANSWER: C. Install all the nuts finger tight, and then tighten them in a four- or five-pointed star pattern to one half of the torque specification found in the owner’s manual, and then again in sequence to the full value. And use a proper torque wrench.

      3. Waste Disposal
        1. A) Take the old oil to the corner gas station
        2. B) Take the old oil back to the store where I bought it
        3. C) Dump the old oil in the sewer
        4. D) Use the old oil to kill weeds on my lawn
        1. ANSWER: A.  Most states require any service station that does oil changes to allow individuals to bring in—for free—small quantities of used oil for disposal. Don’t ever dispose of used crankcase oil in sanitary or storm sewers, or anyplace where it can contaminate the groundwater.

      4. Change Is Good
        1. A) Tighten the new filter ¾ of a turn
        2. B) Tighten the new filter with a wrench
        3. C) Tighten the new filter as tight as I can so it won’t leak
        4. D) Use a generous amount of gasket sealer to prevent leaking
        1. ANSWER: A. Never use gasket sealer. Be sure the old o-ring came off with the old filter. Lightly oil the new o-ring and prefill the new filter if you can. Tighten by hand ¾ of a turn after the o-ring makes contact.

      5. Short Fuse
        1. A) Replace it with one that’s a little bigger
        2. B) Charge the battery overnight
        3. C) Replace it with the same amperage fuse
        4. D) Spray fabric softener on seats to prevent static buildup
        1. ANSWER: C. Never uprate a blown fuse: always use the same size fuse. The correct value of fuse can be looked up in the owner’s manual. Fabric softener will keep you from getting those annoying sparks when you go to open the door, though.

      6. High Test
        1. A) True
        2. B) False
        1. ANSWER: B. Most modern cars that call for premium will run fine on regular without engine damage, but may have reduced performance and economy. Depending on the price differential of premium at your local station, using regular—even if it gives you less miles per gallon—may still give you more miles per dollar.

      7. Rough Ride
        1. A) Absorb shocks
        2. B) Reduce suspension oscillations
        3. C) Keep you from hitting potholes
        4. D) Prevent tire blowouts
        1. ANSWER: B. Shock absorbers are more properly called dampers, because they dampen out suspension oscillations induced by bumps or potholes. You’re on your own dodging those potholes.

      8. Under Pressure
        1. A) On a placard on the door
        2. B) Printed on the side of the tires
        3. C) 35 psi
        4. D) The same as the pressure in the spare tire
        1. ANSWER: A. Most cars show the correct inflation pressure on a sticker in the driver’s doorway. The pressure printed on the tire sidewall is the maximum safe pressure for the tire, and may be far too high for your vehicle.

      9. Check Engine Light
        1. A) Near the driver’s knee
        2. B) In the trunk with the jack and spare
        3. C) Under the hood next to the fuel injectors
        4. D) In the envelope with the owner’s manual
        1. ANSWER: A. By EPA regulation, it’s under the dashboard on the driver’s side.

      10. Hit The Brakes
        1. A) Can stop in a much shorter distance than manual brakes
        2. B) Aren’t necessary if you have anti-lock brakes
        3. C) Are operated by the engine’s air pump
        4. D) Really suck
        1. Answer: D. Power breaks literally suck. Most cars and light trucks power breaks are operated by engine manifold vacuum.
