      1. How many days a week does a student come to the Kumon Center?
        1. Six or Seven
        2. Three or Four
        3. One or Two
        4. Five
        1. We operate on a Primary Day concept. You pick one day a week you know your child can come; on that day we give your child a week's worth of work and your child turns in the previous week's work of work. The second day is optional and flexible.

      2. How frequently each week does a Kumon student do Kumon assignments?
        1. One or two days
        2. three or four days
        3. Five or six days
        4. Seven Days
        1. Kumon students ideally work seven days a week, 365 days a year; however, we can adjust the student's workload to fit your schedule.

      3. Generally, how long is the student at the Kumon Center on Center days?
        1. Three hours
        2. One hour per subject
        3. Twenty to thirty minutes per subject
        1. On average, the student's work will take twenty to thirty minutes per subject at the Center. Some will take more, some less, depending on the student's mental stamina and workload.

      4. What is the minimum enrollment commitment expected of students?
        1. One month
        2. Three months
        3. One year
        4. Two years
        1. Kumon is a long term Program, not a short term fix. In many ways its progress is similar to that seen when a child starts learning to play a musical instrument. While students show significant progress inside a year, dramatic results are seen in those students who stay enrolled one to five years or more. To get the most value out of the program, we encourage enrollment for a minimum of a year. We collect a last month's deposit which is not refundable unless the student has remained enrolled a minimum of one year.

      5. On what level of difficulty material does a student start in Kumon?
        1. Grade level
        2. Below all the student's learning gaps as determined by test.
        3. One year below grade level
        4. Two years below grade level
        1. Each student is tested before enrollment to determine the start point in the Program. This start point will be below all gaps in the child's mastery, and this "rock-solid" foundation tends to be dramatically below grade level.

      6. How does Kumon measure mastery?
        1. Independence
        2. Speed
        3. Accuracy
        4. All of the above
        1. All three aspects are important for determining mastery. If the child needs assistance to answer the material, he hasn't mastered it. If he can't come up with the correct answers, he hasn't mastered it. If he takes longer than the amount of time determined by Kumon to indicate mastery of a particular set, he hasn't mastered it. In order to progress to new material, the child must demonstrate mastery of each step along the way. We aim to keep each child in a "just right" area of difficulty of the material. This ensures the smoothest advancement possible. We look at the child's independence, speed and accuracy on each set of material assigned to ensure that the child has mastered it before advancing to more difficult material.

      7. How much is tuition?
        1. Forty-five dollars an hour
        2. Ninety dollars a week
        3. One hundred twenty five dollars per subject per month
        4. Two hundred dollars per subject per month
        1. There ia also a deposit of the last month's tuition, refndable for those enrolling for a minimum of 12 months and who gie a 30 day advance notice of withdrawal..

      8. How much does the Placement Test cost?
        1. One hundred dollars
        2. Nothing
        3. Fifty dollars
        4. One hundred ninety-five dollars, creditable towards tuition
        1. The Placement Test is complimentary; all it costs is your time. After the Placement Test, you will meet with Mrs. Sue for an enrollment projection. This projection will inform you of approximately when your child will have mastered grade level material, as well as material six months, two years, and three years above grade level.

      9. Who grades the work the student does at home?
        1. The parents do, with answer books borrowed from Kumon.
        2. Kumon Steeplechase
        3. The student does and copies the correcr answers
        4. The Student's sibling.
        1. While parents may pay an extra $15 per month per subject for Center grading, it is in the child's best interest for the work to be graded and corrected daily at home, because his advancement is smoother. Remember the Kumon mantra: "Don't go to bed with a mistake in your head." tudies have shown students advance more quickly when their work is graded and corrected the same day it is completed. Home grading also involves the parents more in the Kumon process and allows them to see their children's progress. Center grading is available for $15 per month per subject for those parents who don't have time to grade.

      10. Which best describes the Kumon curriculum?
        1. It is a series of levels, each consisting of 200 worksheets.
        2. It matches the CFISD curriculum.
        3. It's a bunch of workbooks like you can buy at the store.
        1. Kumon is an international curriculum which does not perfectly match the curriculum in any one school district in the world. Rather, it supplements your child's curriculum by advancing the child in incremental steps. This gentle advancement allows your child to enjoy a series of successes that build upon each other to increase the student's confidence. It also ensures there are no gaps in learning.

      11. What kind of student is Kumon designed for?
        1. Advanced students who need to be more challenged
        2. Students struggling at school
        3. Students with learning disabilities
        4. All of the above
        1. Because Kumon is individualized to each child, any student can benefit from the Program. We have students at each end of the spectrum and everywhere in between. The work is matched to the student's ability regardless of age or grade level. This individualization simply can't be matched in a school setting and is what makes the Program so powerful. It simply can't be replicated by buying exercise books at a school supply store.

      12. What is the role of Mrs. Sue, the Instructor?
        1. She will tutor my child one on one.
        2. She oversees operations and designs my child's lesson plan.
        3. She presents lectures to the class to explain the material.
        4. She answers parents' questions while the students work.
        1. Mrs. Sue oversees the operations of the Center and also oversees the class. Your child will be learning independently in a controlled learning environment. An Assistant will work with your child, and that Assistant reports any issues to Mrs. Sue. At the end of each session, your child will check out with Mrs. Sue, who will review her work for the day and ensure the child understands it and that the work being taken home is of a "just right" difficulty. Mrs. Sue also hands out Kumon dollars the students can use at the Kumon Store one week each month! Information regarding how the student did is sent home with her after each class session.

Kumon is a three way partnership: Parent, Instructor and child. During class, Mrs. Sue will be busy working with the children. but she does want to talk with the parents as well. However, those communications should be restricted to outside of class via a conference, a phone call, or an email. If all that is needed is something basic such as a change of Primary Day or workload, or an inquiry regarding an upcoming event, or making a payment, the Center staff wearing blue shirts can make those changes or answer those questions during class.

      13. Name some of the character traits developed by Kumon study.
        1. Self confidence
        2. Motivation to pursue more challenging work
        3. Self reliance to succeed independently
        4. All of the above and more
        1. Kumon also develops perseverence and a love of learning. These traits come about over a period of time as the child progresses through the program.

      14. What is the key to unlocking a child's potential?
        1. Giving him grade level work as quickly as possible.
        2. Refusing to allow any repetition because that's boring
        3. Teaching him independence
        4. Spoon feeding him the answers
        1. If a child can develop the skill of learning independently, that will give rise to all the character skills Kumon fosters, as well as ultimately allowing that child to achieve his potential.

      15. What happens if a Kumon student does not master a set?
        1. She moves on to the next material, just like in school.
        2. She gets an F and the parent must sign the work.
        3. She repeats the same work until the material is mastered.
        4. She has to sit in the corner at the Center for 30 minutes,
        1. It is important that the child totally master each step along the way. To ensure mastery, we measure independence, speed and accuracy. If your child does not demonstrate mastery of a concept, it would be cruel to progress her into harder work. Instead, we ensure her knowledge is rock solid before giving her even harder work.

      16. How many students worldwide have been enrolled in Kumon?
        1. About 100,000
        2. About 16,000,000
        3. About 4,000,000
        4. About 1,000,000
        1. Kumon is the oldest and largest and most successful supplemental education program in the world. There is a reason for this: It works! Kumon currently serves over 4.1 million students in 45 countries worldwide, and has had an enrollment of over 16 million students in its 50 year history. It was developed by a high school math teacher in Japan to help his second grade son in Math. By the time the son had reached sixth grade, he had mastered calculus. Kumon North America has been named the top tutoring Franchise by Franchise 500 for the last eight years, and is the second largest franchise worldwide, behihnd Subway but ahead of McDonald's, in terms of franchised units.

Kumon is the largest, oldest and most successful after school education program in the world. However, it is not tutoring but is better than tutoring in that it develops many positive character traits in its students. It is also less expensive than conventional tutoring.

      17. If you miss a class you must call Mrs. Sue to explain why.
        1. True
        2. False
        1. Life happens. No explanation is necessary; however, we do want your child to have her work. Please call the Center and we can leave her work outside for you to pick up at your convenience. If you know in advance you won't be able to attend on a Primary Day, you can pick up your child's work early.

      18. The most successful Kumon Students study year round, including summer and holidays.
        1. True
        2. False
        1. Year round study ensures rapid advancement through the program and less opportunity for your child to lose his Kumon "edge." It's interesting to note that a school year consists of about 175 days, while a Kumon year, 365 days, is over twice as long. This helps explain how even average students can progress to material one, two or even three years above grade level with long term Kumon study.

      19. Parents should help their child with corrections, telling him the correct answers.
        1. True
        2. False
        1. A child will "own" an answer more if he figures out the answer himself. A parent's role is to guide the child to the answer as much as possible.

      20. Most successful Kumon parents set a daily "Kumon Time."
        1. True
        2. False
        1. The discipline of having a regular "Kumon Time" will increase your child's chances of success in the Program. Let your child know Kumon is not optional. If time is short, it is far better for the child to do one sheet that day and catch up later than to skip the day entirely.

      21. My other child is four years old; she is too young for Kumon.
        1. True
        2. False
        1. We accept children as young as three into the Junior Kumon program. All we require is that the child is mature enough to sit still and follow instructions for ten minutes. A simple test can be given to determine your child's readiness for the program!

      22. What is the highest level of material covered by those who complete the Math Program?
        1. Trigonometry
        2. Algebra
        3. Differential Equations
        4. Calculus
        1. Math Program completers cover material through differential equations, equivalent to midway through college math. Additionally, it is in program completers that the full spectrum of Kumon character traits--self confidence, self esteem, perseverance, and more--come to fruition. Mrs. Sue's goal for every student who enrolls is that they set their sights on completing the program--much as taekwondo students set their sights on achieving a black belt.

      23. What is the highest level of difficulty covered by those completing the Reading Program?
        1. Paragraph Building
        2. Critical Analysis
        3. Reading Comprehension
        4. Summarization of Passages
        1. Those who complete the Reading Program are capable of reading at a college level. Students who start the Reading Program in early elementary school or younger are capable of completing the entire Reading Program in Middle School or younger, giving them a strong leg up on all their classmates. These students have a wide vocabulary and tremendous poise and self assurance when interacting with others.

      24. How does Kumon differ from conventional tutoring?
        1. Students do work daily, including at home.
        2. Students do not cover work identical to that in school.
        3. Parents are more involved in the student's work.
        4. All of the above
        1. Kumon is a powerful SUPPLEMENTAL program for your child's school curriculum. Through it your child will strengthen basic skills, and ultimately learn advanced skills, which will drive their school grades up and help them move to the head of the class!

      25. Why do Kumon students do work daily?
        1. Because Mrs. Sue said so.
        2. It is the most efficient way to learn.
        3. To give them something to do each day.
        1. Daily work is the engine that drives the Kumon program. There is a whole science of "forgetting curves" that establishes that doing a little bit of something daily is the most efficient way to learn, because less time is spent in reviewing previously learned work and more time in fresh learning as a percentage of the time spent in study. Think of it this way: you wouldn't take seven vitamins and say you're done for the week. Why? Two reasons: it won't work, and it will make you sick. The same thing can be said for Kumon. Doing all the week's work in one day won't help your child advance efficiently, and it will probably make him hate Kumon. Remember the moral of The Tortoise and the Hare: "Slow and steady wins the race."
