No Country for Old Men (2007)

The Field Museum in Chicago. The 1996 movie The Ghost and the Darkness was based on the story of Lt. Col. John Henry Patterson. In March 1898 the British started building a railway bridge over the Tsavo River in East Africa. Over the next nine months, two large male lions killed and ate nearly 140 railway workers. Before work could resume, Patterson had to eliminate the lions.

After many near misses, he finally shot the first lion on December 9, 1898, and three weeks later brought down the second. The first lion killed measured nine feet, eight inches from nose to tip of tail. It took eight men to carry the carcass back to camp. The construction crew returned and completed the bridge in February 1899.

The buffalo herd comprised 2000 animals, the largest herd in America. Nine cameras were utilized in the buffalo hunt. Only one take a day could be made of the buffalo stampede as the animals would often run a distance of 10 miles. It would take the wranglers all day to round them up again.

True. All of the animal captures in the picture were performed by the actual actors; no stuntmen or animal handlers were substituted onscreen. Much of the action sequence audio had to be re-dubbed due to John Wayne's cursing while wrestling with the animals.

The movie is loosely based on the story of the Beast of the Gevaudan, a large wolf that terrorized France in the mid-eighteenth century. The killing of that animal is credited to a local hunter, Jean Chastel. Later storytellers introduced the idea that Chastel shot it with a silver bullet, giving way to werewolf legends.

Director Christophe Gans took liberties with the legend changing the wolf/beast into an African Lion.
